Melissa was in Ancient Greece a nymph, who was tought by the bees how to collect and use honey.
Her connection with the bees granted her great powers, and the benevolence of the gods, who loved the prescious nectar produced by her and her helpers. It certainly was lots of hard work for the Melissae (e.g. of Melissa) to produce honey and in addition to that it was hard to protect the honey from people who wanted it for them selves. So one day Melissa went to Zeus askying for a tool that would help her to protect her produce from greedy hands. Zeus granted her and the Melissae a sting.
Just like Melissa, this sculpture is the reminder of the sweetness and the deep nurturning qualities of the honey, and just like Melissa it provides a protection of these qualities in the person that owns the piece.
